If you are setting up AERIAL SILKS, here are some useful suggestions:
CEILING HEIGHT - FABRIC LENGTH
10ft - 9 yards
15ft - 13 yards
20ft - 16 yards
25ft - 19 yards
30ft - 23 yards
35ft - 26 yards
There are several ways to rig your Aerial Yoga Hammock, as shown in the diagram below.
Even though you may only calculate needing a few yards of fabric for your home hammock based on your ceiling height, we still recommend purchasing extra fabric for tying knots. Hammock rings require about a yard of fabric for tying the proper knots, while hammock hitches require less fabric.
Adding daisy chains or spansets to these setups will allow for quick and easy height adjustments.
You should measure your hammocks based on the height of your safe rigging point. For example, for a 10 foot safe rigging point, you would need approximately 7 yards of fabric for an aerial hammock. (10x2= 20 feet, divided by 3 equals about 7 yards). This would put the bottom of your hammock at around hip level.
Your aerial fabric is machine washable and we recommend the following instructions for proper fabric care:
• Wash only when necessary. Repeated cycles can degrade fabric over time.
• Only use washing machines without an agitator as these can tear fabrics.
• Use gentle detergent with no fabric softener or bleach.
• Set for “gentle wash” cycle with warm water, and a cold water gentle rinse.
• Untangle the fabric as best you can before transferring to the dryer.
• ”Gentle/warm” drying cycles with a “cool down” ending if available.
• Spread out/hang up the fabric to finish drying.
• Once complete, hang or fold immediately to avoid wrinkles.
Prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat will cause fading and damage to fabric. Always store fabrics indoors and out of direct sunlight when not in use.
This is a personal preference based on your practice and how you utilize the hammock. If you prefer to spin, you will want a single point hammock. If you like a rigid structure and a more stable position, you will want a two-point hammock.
Double point hammock is usually preferred for aerial yoga, but it is totally possible on a single point as well. Most aerialists prefer single point hammocks with a swivel for circus-style tricks and performance.
Choosing the correct size of lyra for you is a preference and depends not only on your height, but also your body proportions and movement style. We recommend talking to your instructor to determine which size lyra is the best fit. When comparing lyra sizes, please remember that we measure our lyras by internal diameter.
Here are two measurements we consider when choosing lyra size:
We recommend taking at least a few lyra classes before investing in your own lyra. This way, you can learn which type of lyra best suits your preferred style of movement.
If you just can’t decide, we recommend purchasing a tabless lyra. Tabless lyra’s can be rigged as single point, double point, or even as a tippy lyra.
For beginners and for most aerialists, we recommend hollow steel lyras.
Solid Steel Lyras are MUCH heavier and are great for professional acts that require spinning for a longer period of time. However, they are a thinner 7/8″ bar which can be a bit more painful for certain movements. They also require strength and practice to get them spinning and to lift them for certain tricks.
Yes, lyras with small scratches and flaws are safe to use. Powder coating is relatively delicate when compared to the steel structure of your lyra. It is common for powder coating to develop small scratches and flaws over time, as it can be easily damaged during rigging, transport, or storage.
If you prefer to touch up flaws in your powder coating for aesthetic reasons, you can use black spray paint.
More often than not, the weakest point in your aerial setup is the structure you are hanging from.
While we can help answer your general rigging questions here at Aerial Essentials, we cannot give advice remotely about hanging from a new structure. We strongly recommend hiring a rigger or structural engineer who is experienced in rigging for aerialists to inspect your structure and help you determine the safest way to hang from your beams.
Not all homes are constructed in a way that is safe for aerial arts, and you can do serious damage to yourself and your home if you attempt to create a rig point without the proper expertise.
Rigging from trees can be an extremely rewarding part of aerial training. It can also be quite risky and it is very difficult to judge the inner strength of a tree by looking at it from the outside. There are too many sad stories of seemingly healthy, strong branches snapping under the weight of an aerialist, and every tree is different. Countless injuries have been sustained through improper tree rigging. Unfortunately, there is no “right” answer to this one, nor any foolproof way of knowing whether a tree branch will support you or not.
Please, contact an experienced arborist who has knowledge and experience working with the dynamic loads of aerial arts when considering rigging from tree branches.
Hardware will wear at different rates based on a WIDE variety of factors. We recommend replacing any hardware that shows 10% or more metal wear.
Soft materials such as spansets and slings should be replaced when they show flaws such as snagging, tearing, or friction burns. A small investment in new hardware/rigging could be life-saving.
